First Openly Gay Bishop to Pray at Invocation

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Bishop V. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop will be praying at the inaugural invocation at the Lincoln Memorial at Barack Obama’s Jan 20 inauguration. "There's no question in my mind that (Barack Obama) is the president who understands (GLBT) issues and comes out of a background knowing what it's like to be discriminated against because of who you are," Robinson said, on Jan 12. "I think for the first time in a very long time we'll have a friend in the White House…The fact that Rick Warren and I are each giving invocations during inauguration festivities just shows that the new president means to include all Americans."

Robinson stated that his prayer is not only for Barack Obama (and Joe Biden, who will be present at the invocation) but to the nation as a whole. "Given the difficult circumstances we all face and given the fact we have placed so much hope on and responsibility on Barack,” Robinson said “I think it's appropriate to remind the nation he's only a human being and he can't do all this by himself. In fact, all of us will need to play our own part."  -- read more here
